Putting up Ice

1920's - In the early years, a horse was used to put up ice. This photo is at King Island, but the practice was the same at all locations. The cakes of ice would be buried in sawdust in the icehouse and would keep all summer. This was the source of refrigeration before electricity. The process became motorized in subsequent years, and today generators, refrigerators and ice machines have done away with this.
